old cell phones at collection boxes like this one at all Oahu Home Depot
locations. The batteries are shipped to a recycling facility on the
mainland.
Recycle Your
Rechargeable Batteries! It’s Easy.
The Rechargeable Battery and Cell Phone Recycling Program has Come to
Oahu!
These batteries can be found in cordless power tools, cellular and
cordless phones, laptop computers, camcorders and other portable
electronic equipment.
The participating retailers will collect your spent rechargeable battery
packs and have them shipped to a recycling facility on the mainland. The
recovered materials will be used to make new batteries and stainless
steel products.
They are potentially harmful products whose proper disposal is essential
to protecting the environment.
To help with the recycling effort, local AAA offices establish battery
collection points and offer free vehicle battery checks. AAA also
donates a portion of recycling proceeds to various environmental groups
and other charities.
Each year, approximately 97 percent of vehicle batteries are recycled.
However, the remaining 3 percent add up to millions of pounds of lead
and gallons of sulfuric acid. These can be discharged into the
environment, creating health and safety hazards for humans and animals,
as well as a potential fire hazard.
