Indian and Australian universities are collaborating and networking in a number of important areas, and an increasing number are entering into formal exchange arrangements. This is happening both at the level of the individual universities and at the higher level of the university systems.

In June 1999, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and the Australian Vice Chancellors Committee (AVCC) signed an agreement to cooperate. This provides a framework for developing closer ties between Indian and Australian universities.The two organisations are implementing a number of initiatives in the areas of information sharing, faculty and student exchange, staff development, research exchange programs and university management.

A growing number of Indian universities are establishing their own agreements or memoranda of understanding with Australian universities in particular fields.
